AN HERBAL APPROACH TO SKINCARE

There is a strong relationship between herbalism and skincare. Herbalism seeks to restore balance and heal the root of all dis-ease in the body. Your skin is a reflection of how well your body is able to eliminate toxins. Chronic skin conditions like eczema and acne are often due to immune stress and hormonal imbalances. Using holistic herbal remedies is the best way to support the body’s homeostasis and restore balance and skin health. Herbalism and skincare became one for me when I began working with moringa. I was blown away by the total body healing of the plant. My studies of herbalism taught me that skin care is health care as everything in the body is interconnected.

Our skin is a reflection of how well your body is able to eliminate toxins.

Taking a holistic or total body approach is best for everything, especially skincare. Our skin, particularly on the face, is so delicate. Conventional and synthetically derived products rarely heal but rather mask the problem and often come with harsh side effects like increased redness, sensitivity, and inflammation. An herbal, plant based approach to skincare works in synergy with the skin to support its inherent vitality and a balanced glowing complexion. The best path to radiant skin is to look beyond the visible symptoms and address the root causes of imbalance.

Beauty from the inside out

For glowing and clear skin important elements to consider are nutrition, detoxification, and hormonal disruption as a physical response to stress. My two absolute favorite herbs that support these areas are moringa leaf powder and ashwagandha root. Bother are powerful adaptogenic herbs used for thousands of years in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda.

Every day I add a teaspoon of moringa leaf powder to my smoothie or green juice and a half teaspoon of ashwagandha to my morning coffee. I love moringa for its nutritional support and detoxification properties. The leaves are full of bioavailable plant based iron, protein, calcium, and vitamins B, C, D, and E which are essential for optimal skin health. In Ayurvedic text moringa is said to deeply and rapidly penetrate tissues for deep cleansing of the blood. It’s so important to detoxify our bodies of the toxins and pollutants that accumulate over time. I think of taking moringa leaf as cleansing and nourishing my skin from the inside out.
